Berger Hammerschlag, Alice

Biography

Alice Berger Hammerschlag (b. Vienna, Austria, 1917, and d. 1969) was educated at The Kunstgewerbeschule and Vienna Academy of Arts.

In 1938 she moved to Ireland. She held solo exhibitions at Queen's University, Belfast; Dawson Gallery, Dublin (both 1968); Ulster Office, London (1966); Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol (1962); Avgarde Gallery, Manchester (1960); and New Vision Centre Gallery, London (1959), among others. She founded the Alice Berger Hammerschlag foundation which continues to award Irish artists working in abstraction.

Apart from The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, her work is in the collections of Queen's University, Belfast, Ulster Museum and Arts Council of Northern Ireland among others.
