Scott, William

William Scott b. Greenock, Scotland, 1913 and d.1989, studied at the Belfast School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools, London.

In 1958 he represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale. One of his first solo shows was at the Hanover Gallery in London (1953) and he regularly exhibited there during the 1960s (1956, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1965, 1967, 1969). The Tate Gallery, London, presented a major retrospective of his work in 1972 and a 1986 exhibition at the Ulster Museum in Belfast toured to both Dublin and Edinburgh. More recently Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Dublin, held a survey of Scott’s work in 1998, and there were solo shows at Beaux Arts, London (2000) and Denise Bibro Fine Art, New York (2004).

Scott’s work is extensively included in collections throughout Europe including the UK and Ireland and worldwide in USA, Brazil, Canada and Australia.
