McSweeney, Seán

Biography

Sean McSweeney (b. Dublin, Ireland, 1935) is self-taught as a painter.

 

He began exhibiting work regularly in the 1960s, in the Irish Exhibition of Living Art and the Oireachtas and had his first solo exhibition in the Dawson Gallery in 1965. A retrospective of his work was held in 2007 in the Model, Sligo, the Triskel Arts Centre, Cork and the Solstice Arts Centre, Navan. Previously in 1990 Galway Arts Festival organised a retrospective exhibition of his work, which travelled to the Royal Hibernian Academy's Gallagher Gallery, Dublin. He had recent solo shows in the Vanguard, Cork (2005), The Kenny Gallery, Galway (2004); and John Martin Gallery, London (2003). Major group exhibitions include ‘Celtic Triangle’ (1971); ‘The Delighted Eye’, Earlham Street Gallery, London (1980); 14th ‘Cagnes-Sur-Mer Painting Festival(1985); ‘Contemporary Artists from Ireland’, Austin Desmond Fine Art Gallery, London (1990); and ‘Painting Landscape’, Fenderesky Gallery, Belfast (2001).

 

His work is included in the public collections of The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon; Trinity College Dublin; Limerick City Gallery; the Arts Council of Northern Ireland; Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane; Ballinglen Arts Foundation; and the Boyle Civic Collection.
