Biography

Martin Gale b. Worcester, England, 1949, studied at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin.

Recent solo exhibitions include Fenton Gallery, Cork (2008); Taylor Galleries, Dublin (2006) and ‘Nissan Art Project’ at the RHA, Dublin and Ulster Museum, Belfast (2004-2005). Selected group shows include ‘Storylines’, John Martin Gallery, London (2009); ‘Martin Gale Selects’, Fenton Gallery, Cork (2007); ‘Irish Art of the Seventies-Modernist Irish Art 1960-1990’ Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Dublin and The Crawford Art Gallery, Cork (2006-2007).

Gale is extensively represented in public art collections including Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane; Office of Public Works; National Self-Portrait Collection, Limerick; Municipal Gallery, Waterford; Crawford Municipal Gallery, Cork; European Parliament, Strasbourg; Chester Beatty Library, Dublin; and Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Dublin.

Born in the UK, Martin Gale moved to Ireland as a child and studied at the National College of Art & Design. In 1982 he was elected a member of Aosdána and in 1996 he became a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. A former Board member of the National Gallery of Ireland, he represented Ireland at the Paris Biennale in 1980
