McGuinness, Norah

Biography

Norah McGuinness (b. 1901, London Derry and d. 1980) studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art and at Chelsea Polytechnic in London.

She represented Ireland in the 1950 Venice Biennale with Nano Reid. There was a retrospective of her work in the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin in 1968. More recently there was an exhibition of her work in the Model Sligo (2011) and her work was included in the group shows ‘Holding Together’ Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin (2010); ‘The Encompassing Eye’ Crawford Art Gallery, Cork (2009); ‘A Selection from the Niland Collection’ Draíocht, Dublin (2008); and ‘The Great Southern Hotel Collection’ Crawford Art Gallery, Cork (2007).

McGuinness is represented in the collections of The Crawford Art Gallery, Cork; Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Dublin; National Gallery of Ireland; Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane; The Victoria and Albert Museum, London; The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, and The Arts Council of Northern Ireland, among others.
