Byrne, Gerard

Biography
Gerard Byrne (b. 1969) works in photography, film, theatre and multi-screen installation. As one of Ireland’s leading artists he has exhibited in galleries and museums across the world. He represented Ireland at the 2007 Venice Biennale and participated in Documenta, Performa, as well as Biennale’s in Auckland, Gwangju, Istanbul, Lyon and Sydney. Aside from the Arts Council, his work can be found in many international collections including the Hirshhorn, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Tate and UBS.

Gerard Byrne b. Dublin, Ireland, 1969, studied at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, New School for Social Research, New York and Whitney Independent Study Program, New York.

In 2007 he represented Ireland in the Venice Biennale. His work was included in dOCUMENTA 13 (2012); ‘You have been there’, Galerie Marian Goodman, Paris (2011); and ‘Samuel Beckett: A Passion for Painting’, National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin (2006). Solo exhibitions of his work include the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Dublin (2011); the Frankfurter Kunstverein (2003); and the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin (2002).

Public Collections representing his work include The Tate Collection, London; MUSEION, Bolzano, Italy; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, USA; Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Dublin and Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane.
